Your convenience, comfort, and safety are our main priorities here at Lava Car Rental. The Volkswagen 4x4 Transporter camper van is ideal for travelling around Iceland from late May to early September, which is Iceland's spring and summer seasons. Thanks to the Transporter's 4x4 capability, you can drive on all paved, gravel and mountain roads (F-roads) with no stress.
If you are visiting Iceland from late September to early May (the autumn or winter season in Iceland), the VW Transporter is also a good option. You can drive it on the icy, snowy roads and under the unpredictable and everchanging Icelandic winter weather. Please note that only a LIMITED number of campsites are open during winter, most of them only available during summertime.
Considering the possibility of experiencing extreme weather (heavy snow/ storm/ heavy winds), it is not recommended to camp with a van during autumn and winter in Iceland. We recommend you rent a 4x4 vehicle and stay in hostels or hotels if you are visiting Iceland in winter.
The Volkswagen 4x4 Transporter camper van can safely take you to all the attractions around Iceland. You can visit the Golden Circle, the waterfalls and black sand beaches along the South Coast, the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, the Snaefellsnes peninsula, the North of Iceland or even the less-populated Eastfjords and Westfjords. You can also go to the Icelandic Highlands with your VW Transporter when the F-roads are open in summer.
Please note that you will need to drive across rivers to visit the Icelandic Highlands area (including Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork). We ONLY recommend visiting the site with the rental car to drivers with experience in river crossing. No insurance can cover the damage cost if you break the car's engine or chassis while crossing rivers.
Located in the northern region of the island, the Diamond Circle is a slight detour off the Ring Road and features some of the most beautiful waterfalls, canyons, and historic landmarks of Iceland. It also connects to the most charming coastal town which happens to be the whale-watching capital of Iceland.
Located in the southeast region of Iceland, Jökulsárlón is one of the most scenic glacier lakes and beaches in the country. Drive along with the coastline and capture photos of majestic glaciers and ice formations that line the beaches and waters. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to see some seals!
Explore the best of the highlands in Iceland: Landmannalaugar or Kerlingarfjöll. Discover the amazing landscapes, enjoy a hike or take a bath in the natural hot springs. Those attractions are only accessible in summer and with a 4WD vehicle.
