Where can I drive the Tesla Model Y in Iceland?

The Tesla Model Y is a great option for exploring Iceland comfortably in any season. Its smooth handling and modern safety features make it well suited for everyday driving, whether you're visiting in summer or navigating winter conditions with care.

This version is a 2WD (rear-wheel drive) model, which performs best on paved roads and maintained gravel routes. It’s ideal for popular travel itineraries such as the Ring Road, the Golden Circle, the South Coast, and other easily accessible regions across the country.

While Icelandic weather can change quickly—especially in winter with wind, rain, or icy patches—the Model Y offers a stable and controlled driving experience when conditions are approached sensibly. It’s a reliable choice for travellers planning to stick to main routes and well-travelled areas.

You can also take the Tesla Model Y on gravel roads leading to many scenic spots, as long as they are regularly maintained. However, F-roads in the Highlands are not permitted with this vehicle. These routes require a high-clearance 4x4.

Quiet, efficient, and easy to drive, the Tesla Model Y is perfect for couples, families, or small groups of up to five people looking to experience Iceland in a modern and eco-friendly way.

Book your Tesla Model Y and enjoy a relaxed, electric road trip through Iceland’s most iconic landscapes.

FAQs About Tesla in Iceland

Why should I rent a Tesla in Iceland?

Tesla has a well-deserved reputation as one of the most reliable, luxurious, and comfortable electric cars to travel in. With a Tesla, you can enjoy premium comfort, while saving money on gas and helping the planet.

What Charging Cables Are Included with an Electric Rental Car?

When you rent an electric car in Iceland, your vehicle comes with a Type 2 charging cable, which allows you to charge at most public AC charging stations across the country.

For fast charging, you don’t need to bring your own cable. All DC fast charging stations in Iceland, including Tesla Superchargers, are equipped with a CCS Combo 2 cable, which is fully compatible with your vehicle.

In short, your rental includes everything you need to charge easily at both AC and DC charging stations throughout your journey.

Where to charge a Tesla in Iceland?

You can go to electric charging stations. There are many stations in the capital area and all around Iceland, mainly located along the Ring Road. You can see the nearest charging stations with this online map or search for the charging stations on Google Maps. You can find more info about charging stations in Iceland in this article.

How often do I need to charge my Tesla?

Driving range can vary depending on several factors, including driving style, weather conditions and temperature, as well as the total load of passengers and luggage. Any stated range should therefore be considered as an estimate rather than a guarantee.

Under ideal conditions, the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y (2WD) can reach up to 534 km on a full charge. The Tesla Model Y Long Range Dual Motor (AWD) can achieve up to 600 km, depending on conditions.

How long does it take to charge a Tesla?

It depends on your type of charger. The Tesla can charge at three voltage output levels– Slow, Fast, and Rapid.

Slow (AC 22 kW): It will take you up to 5 hours.

Fast (DC 50 kW): it will take you between 1 hour and 30 minutes to charge it fully.

Rapid with Superchargers (up to DC 250 kW): it will take you 20 minutes to add electricity for more than 300 km.

We recommend picking the rapid charger to spend only a few moments charging your car during your trip in Iceland.

How to charge a Tesla?

Go to a charging station, turn off the car, and then simply plug the charging cable into the charging port. You can either wait if it is a supercharging station or leave your car for a few hours if it is a normal charging station.

How much does it cost to charge a Tesla?

Charging a Tesla in Iceland is easy, quick, and significantly more affordable than filling up a petrol car. As of January 2025, the average cost for a charge at a fast-charging station (DC 50 kW) was around  3,750 ISK or $26. In comparison, refuelling a similar petrol vehicle costs between 15,000 and 17,000 ISK or $105 to $118. Choosing an electric vehicle is clearly a cost-effective way to explore Iceland.

How Do I Pay for Charging When Renting with Lava Car Rental?

If you're renting a Tesla with Lava Car Rental, you create your own account using the mobile apps of the charging networks (such as ON or ISORKA) and pay as you go at the stations.

How Charged Will the Tesla Be at Pick-Up and What’s Expected at Drop-Off?

When you pick up your Tesla, it will be delivered with a charge of over 70%. We kindly ask that you return the vehicle with at least 70% battery level as well.

To make this easier, there is a Tesla Supercharger station just 100 metres from the Lava Car Rental office—within easy walking distance. You’re welcome to arrive a bit earlier before drop-off, charge the vehicle, and enjoy a coffee in our office while the car gets ready for return.

Can I drive in the Highlands with a Tesla?

No, sorry - Teslas aren’t suitable for driving on F-roads.
